Making the shift from team member to leader

IPA CPD Network (formerly Training Forum)

In this virtual CPD Network session, we explore one of the most significant shifts in a professional career: moving from being a capable team member to becoming an effective leader.

Many people are promoted because they are trusted to deliver excellent work. Leadership, however, requires a different mindset, different behaviours, and a different definition of success. It is no longer about being the person who does the work best. It is about setting direction, building confidence in others, and taking responsibility for results delivered through your team.

In this practical session, we will look at how to develop a clear personal leadership identity, build trust and psychological safety within your team, and learn when to hold the line on standards and when to step back and allow others to take ownership. We will also explore how to set clear expectations, address challenges early, and shift from being busy doing the work to leading performance effectively.

Drawing on real world experience of supporting professionals as they step into leadership roles, this session will offer straightforward, actionable approaches that can be applied immediately. Whether you are newly promoted, leading former peers, or preparing for your next leadership move, you will leave with greater clarity about your role as a leader and the confidence to lead without feeling you have to do everything yourself.
